DROPPING THE ANCHOR, Darryl headed for the bench seat on his boat. The night sky was lit up with stars, the perfect time to unwind. The perfect time to think and talk to God. Besides getting a haircut to signify his new self, he hadn’t changed much. He was still full of anger. Still irate by the injustices his parents had committed. He wanted retribution so badly it invaded his sleep on a nightly basis.

However, the desire to be rid of the bitter feelings outweighed the need for vengeance. He was so tired of being angry. Tired of everything triggering the emotion in him. His grandmother had urged him to pray. Chloe wanted him to pray. Even his boys had asked him to pray. It was time to learn how and to get used to speaking to God so that it would be his first response instead of anger.

He bowed his head, closed his eyes, and clasped his hands loosely together. “Lord, this is new to me, but I want it to be like second nature. I don’t want to let anger rule me. I’ve accepted Jesus as my Savior, but I’ve been holding on the reins of my life. Please, help me surrender all to You. Please help me to seek You first. I can’t take this anymore.”

Silence fell over him, but for once he didn’t feel like the Lord was ignoring him. The sound of the current soothed his soul. Why hadn’t he thought to come out here sooner? His mood always improved on the water. Just unburdening himself to the Lord took away some of the weight he’d been harboring. He leaned back, sighing as quiet wrapped around him.

“Lord, I have to do something about my mother.” He gulped. Hearing the word aloud unnerved him. “I don’t know how to even talk to her without feeling resentment. This can’t be what You want for me.”

He purposely pictured his mother. She’d put on some weight, but there seemed to be a peace that followed her. Except for the times she tried turning on the water works to illicit his sympathy. How was he supposed to forgive a woman who had walked away? With his father in prison, she’d left him without a parent. Without love.

Not that his grandmother hadn’t done a good job. She had helped him with homework, attended every basketball game he played in. She had always been there, but lacked affection and nurturing traits. She wasn’t his mother, and he had felt the loss daily. That is until he stuffed it down into the dark recesses of his mind, with a promise to never dwell on it again.

His phone vibrated. He pulled it out, noticing it was the paging service. Another patient needed advice. Hopefully it wasn’t Brianna.
